Exploring Yayoi Kusama: Pumpkin Art at BYC Kids
At BYC Kids, we love introducing young artists to famous creators who inspire imagination, boldness, and self-expression. This week in art class, we explored the incredible world of Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese contemporary artist known for her vibrant colors, infinity rooms, and iconic polka-dotted pumpkins. Her work is all about repetition, pattern, and immersive experiences—perfect themes for young learners to dive into!
Who is Yayoi Kusama?
We started our lesson by learning a bit about Kusama’s life and art. The kids were fascinated by how she has been creating art since she was their age! We looked at pictures of her famous pumpkin sculptures and paintings, noticing her use of bright yellow, bold black dots, and strong shapes. We talked about repetition and pattern—two key elements in her art—and how they create movement and energy.
Creating Our Own Kusama-Inspired Pumpkins
After our discussion, it was time to get hands-on! Each child received a pumpkin (paper or 3D, depending on the project) and chose a base color. We encouraged them to think like Kusama, using bold contrasts and filling their pumpkins with dots, patterns, and repetition. The room was filled with creativity as kids experimented with different brush techniques, sponges, and even their fingertips to make their dots unique.
Key Art Concepts We Learned:
At BYC Kids, we believe that art is a powerful way for children to learn and express themselves. Through fun art activities and interactive games, our art teacher Anna teaches the elements and principles of design, such as color, shape, balance, texture, and more. With a focus on creativity and experimentation, Anna uses hands-on projects to help children understand these key concepts in a playful way. Whether it's through art history lessons or building foundational skills, Anna ensures every student feels inspired to explore their artistic voice and build confidence in their creations.

Our Pumpkin Gallery
At the end of class, we displayed our pumpkins to admire everyone's hard work. The kids loved seeing how each piece was different, even though they were all inspired by the same artist. They proudly shared what they loved most about their pumpkins and how they chose their designs.
This was such a fun and immersive way to explore contemporary art while celebrating the season! We love giving kids the opportunity to connect with artists, experiment with techniques, and bring their own ideas to life. Who knows? Maybe we have some future Kusamas in our midst!

Presenting artwork
At BYC Kids, we encourage children to share their artwork in front of the class, which plays a vital role in developing their art vocabulary and confidence. By explaining their creative process and the choices behind their work, kids learn to articulate their ideas and connect with others about their artistic expressions. This practice not only strengthens their ability to discuss art but also boosts their self-esteem, helping them feel proud of their creations. Speaking about their artwork allows children to reflect on their progress and fosters a sense of ownership and accomplishment in their artistic journey.
